100% Blaufrankisch from the Altenberg vineyard. The 30 year old vines are grown on sandy loam with chalk, with south-west exposure. Judith uses a range of over crops: vetch, buckwheat, white clover, yellow clover, vetch, meadow vetchling, phacelia, calendula. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in a wooden fermenter of 3500 litres with indigenous yeasts, and malolactic fermentation is in barriques. The Altenberg is matured 24 months in 225l and 500l barrels, 50% new oak. Aged for one more year in bottle before release. It is a dense, structured wine that benefits from the small oak barrels. Total production: 1500 bottles.
The 2015 Blaufränkisch Ried Altenberg is deep, intense and fresh on the pure, concentrated, rather plummy nose with herbal and lemon notes. Silky textured, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a pure, fresh and elegant red that has a long and juicy, complex and tightly woven finish that indicates great aging potential and should be kept for another two years. Tasted in June 2020. Anticipated Maturity: 2020-2045
