The St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio Sanct Valentin appears a deep straw yellow color in the glass. Fruity aromas of apple, pear and fine vanilla lead to a palate that is strong in character, with pleasant acidity and smoky nuances.
A true all-rounder that pairs well with both fish and red meat yet is also a perfect match for risotto with herb pesto.
Our winemaker Hans Terzer unfolds his great artistry and experience with the Sanct Valentin wines. Selecting only the most excellent grapes from the vineyards of the St. Michael-Eppan Winery, he creates elegant, intense and complex wines, characterised by their exquisite minerality, finest aromatic, and exceptional ageing properties.
Sanct Valentin Pinot Grigio was first produced in 1986 when for the first time, after selecting the first grapes from chosen vineyards, it was vinified in small wooden barrels. The expressive Sanct Valentin Pinot Grigio is highly appreciated with its smoothly integrated acidity, strength and fullness. It is one of Italy’s most gifted Pinot Grigio wines and promises an excellent drinking experience even after many years of ageing.
Fermentation, malolactic fermentation and development on the lees in barrique-tonneaux. Assemblage after nearly a year, followed by at least six months of further maturation in concrete barrels.
The St. Michael-Eppan 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Sanct Valentin shows medium fruit weight with peach, honey and dried hay. I do notice the 14% alcohol content that seems high for this category of fresh white wine from the far north of Italy. Hopefully, this is not a sign of things to come as the climate changes. This is a thickly textured expression of this versatile grape. It sees 11 months in oak and eight months in cement. Anticipated Maturity: 2022-2026
