Pale gold yellow in color with light green sheen, brilliant, lively and clear, a mature appearance. Finely expressed lemon scented honeydew, with hints of menthol, acacia then dried fruits, St George's mushrooms from meadows and iodized mineral. When opened hints of beeswax, gingerbread and menthol lemon appear. Full, fresh, rich and virile taste. An honest effect covered with mellowness well combined with acidity and halfway through it is joined by toasted nuts. The rich finish explodes in a hint of freshness accentuating the iodized mineral, Muscat and boxtree. Slight plant bitterness is mixed with long lasting quality. When older, it should change into terpenic aromas, white truffles on honeyed hazelnut background. A powerful fine wine, with dual complexity and freshness.

In 2013, this historic estate celebrated its 500th anniversary – 19 successive generations of winegrowers in the Mellot family. Today Alphonse Jr. is in total charge, having taken over the reigns from his father Alphonse Sr. fully fifteen years ago. The property, known as La Moussiere, is now at the height of quality for white wines world-wide. All farming is organic and certified biodynamic, with an elite team in the vineyards focused on low yields and ideal ripeness. Their Sauvignons have acquired a rare precision and each parcel is well-defined, perhaps even more so with the reds.

The 2020 Sancerre Generation XIX is seductive with its round, full body caressing the palate. It offers pure fruit that's redolent of pineapple as well as florals. At 14.5% alcohol and with 10 months on lees, there's plenty of weight. While the alcohol is a bit higher than I'd like, this is still an impressive and ambitious style.
