The GG bottling offers all of the 1896 Trocken character plus an extra kick of saltiness and spice and basil leaf – a more compact, firm acidity in the middle framed by a little extra roundness from the barrel, all nicely judged. 2024 brings a cool vintage aroma profile within a typically expressive red slate context. The GG comes from the highest, steepest, stoniest part of the vineyard where the roots are closest to the bedrock – about 100m above the river line. Planted in 1902, this too is the product of ungrafted vines. Fermented and aged in traditional fuder barrels.
The Carl Loewen estate dates back to 1803 when an agent in Paris purchased a set of vineyards and buildings owned by the Maximin order. This sale was part of an auction used to generate money for the Napoleonic government after secularization. The purchase included the Maximiner Klosterlay, Maximin Grünhaus in the Ruwer, and Maximiner Herrenberg in Longuich. Interestingly, the purchase also included an administration building for the Maximin order that was sold to the Piedmont family in Filzen. Today, this is the family home and shares architectural details with the house at Grünhaus. The agent then split up the properties and sold them piece by piece to generate more money. It is for this reason that the Grünhaus today includes such large blocks in the Abtsberg – that property was sold to a single family, the vom Schubert’s. The Maximin Klosterlay was the first site acquired by the Loewen Family in 1805.
This masterpiece of precision is cool and delicate with terrific understated power and depth. I love the aromas of white flowers and leaves dripping after a thunderstorm. And the elegance on the crystalline palate is breathtaking. What an exciting interplay of ripeness and coolness in the dazzling finish. From vines planted in 1902. Drink or hold.
The 2023 Riesling Longuicher Maximin Herrenberg Grosses Gewächs comes from vines planted on their own roots in 1902, from a parcel above the Alte Reben parcel. The nose almost has an overtone of curly parsley within its creamy citrus vibe, aided by pepper and more air brings peach. The palate offers fill, a touch of hazelnut, exquisite concentration and absolute contour provided by pure lemon peel.
