The nose is fruity, racy and offers power, a very fine tight grain as well as complexity. Notes of full-bodied boysenberry, full-bodied strawberry and, to a lesser extent, full-bodied blackcurrant are combined with fine touches of violet, iris, violet plum, blackberry, very discreet hints of licorice stick/mentholated licorice, vanilla and an imperceptible hint of blond tobacco and toastiness. Fruity, balanced, silky and melodious on the palate, with lovely definition, fine grain, power, minerality and smoothness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of boysenberry, full-bodied blackcurrant and, more lightly, strawberry, combined with hints of flowers, licorice, chocolate and toast, as well as very fine hints of hazelnut, chocolate and a touch of vanilla (in the background). Fine, elegant tannins. Very fine chewiness on the finish (pleasant and greedy). Good length and persistence. An imperceptible hint of toasted bread/almond on the finish.

Chateau Pape Clement Description

Château Pape Clément is one of Bordeaux's oldest Grands Crus. Its Vineyard was established in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest son of a noble Bordeaux family. Archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Goth became Pope in 1305, under the name of Clement V. The Château is named after him. Vineyard then belonged to the Archbishopric of Bordeaux until the French Revolution. The estate has been producing wine on the same land for 7 centuries.

Wine Advocate: 96 Points

Blended of 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Pape Clement has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a serious, earthy nose with truffles, tilled soil, underbrush and smoked meats over a cassis, baked plums and redcurrants core plus a touch of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy, the palate is built like a brick house, supporting muscular black fruit and earthy notions and finishing very long and mineral laced. Anticipated Maturity: 2022-2042

Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points

This rich, warm wine offers tannins cushioned within layers of black fruits. It is dense with structure and fruit while also having the freshness and acidity typical of this vintage. The wine will age for several years, becoming richer and more opulent. Drink from 2025. Cellar Selection -R.V.
