Complete wine with a certain concentration of fruit and fine quality of tannins. Crushed-fruit aromas with a hint of smoke. Round and full on the palate with well-integrated tannins providing a firmness and length on the finish. Constant from beginning to end.
The 11.5-hectare vineyard of Petrus is situated on the top of the highest elevation on the Pomerol plateau and is planted to 100% Merlot grapes. The location of Petrus allows for natural drainage of the vineyard, which is especially important due to the high percentage of iron-rich clay in the soil. The soil and terroir of Petrus are unique.
Petrus makes only one wine. Olivier Berrouet has been the winemaker at Petrus since 2008, when he took over for his father, Jean-Claude Berrouet, who was the winemaker at Petrus from 1964 until his retirement.
The grapes are hand-harvested over five to six days and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The wine is aged in 50% or more new French oak for 15 to 18 months to avoid any excess of extraction.
Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting, the 2012 Petrus demonstrated a forward, fruit-driven, ripe raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet underneath which lies graphite and forest floor aromas. It seems refined, understated, nonchalant even. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory opening, as if there was a tiny drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruit infused with cooked meat, black pepper and sage notes, although I was anticipating a finish armed with more body. That may well develop in time, yet it remains a regal Pomerol that will probably merit a higher score with bottle age, hence the plus-sign against the score. Tasted January 2016. Anticipated Maturity: 2020-2045
