60% Grenache (from a very low yielding vineyard planted in 1905), 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 10% Vaccarese
The Grenache is aged exclusively in concrete vats for 9 months. The other grape varieties are aged in new barrels for 9 months as well.
In the years 1905-1910, our great-grandfather Edmond Tacussel planted vines on a combe. "But he is crazy!" said his contemporaries "The stones are too big, he won't be able to work with his horse...". Today, some families who own vines in this area can tell the same story. Consequently, this name is a wink to all these madmen who gave birth to one of the best terroir of our appellation: La Crau.
Next up—and one of the wines of the vintage—the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% each of Cinsault and Vaccarèse. It was completely destemmed and the Grenache was raised all in concrete, with the balance raised in larger barrels. This sensational wine offers flat out awesome notes of smoked meats, graphite, spice box and licorice, as well as full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannin and a silky, seamless, sexy profile that keeps you coming back to the glass. While the Deux Ex Machina is a bigger, richer wine, this has more elegance and polish. Drink this beauty anytime over the coming decade. Anticipated Maturity: 2016-2026
