Clos Saint Jean Description

From 50-100 year old vines (the younger Grenache is sold off to negociants and particularly Tardieu-Laurent). Sustainable farming. The grenache is aged in concrete tanks, other varieties in new French oak for 12 months. The raw material for this wine is what is deemed at many domaines suitable for their top end cuvées, yet at Clos Saint-Jean this is their classic bottling. This cuvée "Vieilles Vignes" is produced from the oldest vines of the estate and is made only for the US market.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

A blend for the American importer, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is always pretty much the same assemblage as the regular bottling but with a higher proportion of old-vine Grenache. In this year, that means more black cherries in the mix and a bit more tannin heft. It still boasts some red berry notes as well. Full-bodied and velvety, it's a terrific effort that provides solid value and should provide solid drinking for the next decade. Anticipated Maturity: 2023-2033
