The Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru Echezeaux du Dessus appears a dark, dense ruby color in the glass. Black fruit on the nose is dominated by notes of violets and peonies. Initially closed, but a little oxygenation brings out notes of sweet spice and a complex, meaty aroma. The palate is big, bold and muscular, the wine is very rich on the middle palate, with the aromatics continuing through to the finish. A good structure also through to the finish.
A perfect accompaniment for slow cooked, braised or roasted red meat dishes and, at maturity, with game. Also beautiful alongside oily fish in sauce such as lamprey and eel.
100% Pinot Noir sourced from 55 year-old vines located in the lower part of the Echézeaux, at the upper limit of Grand Echézeaux.
After racking, pressing and settling, the wine is barreled for malolactic fermentation before beginning an aging period of 24 months. A single racking and no filtration before bottling. Maximum 30% new barrels.
Rich aromas of dark fruit and toasty oak introduce the 2018 Echézeaux du Dessus Grand Cru, a deep and muscular wine that's full-bodied and layered—but also so structured and youthfully primary as to be hard to definitively assess. This will need every month of its long élevage to round out, but the raw materials are promising.
A markedly spicy wide-ranging nose combines notes of red cherry, raspberry, plum liqueur and hints of Asian-style tea. The supple and round middle weight flavors aren't especially dense though they do possess a seductive texture before culminating in a lightly stony, long and powerful finale where a touch of warmth gradually emerges. While this is certainly very good, it's perhaps not quite at its usual very high level.Drink: 2030+
