Alzero is another exquisite anomaly in the world of Italian wine, a red blend—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot—as seen through the distinctive lens of Giuseppe Quintarelli himself. All of the grapes for this wine are dried before pressing, and the resulting juice is aged carefully in a selection of wooden vessels for seven years before it is bottled. Alzero is a love letter to crisp fall evenings and earthy red fruit: a dedication to the elegance and balance that only precision and time can produce.
Giuseppe Quintarelli Description
40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot
The gapes for Alzero are harvested before most other grapes, at the end of August and beginning of September. After harvest, grapes sit in wooden boxes or on rush mats until being pressed in mid-December. Grapes are pressed and after 20 days of maceration, alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts that lasts approximately 50 days. Wine is then aged in French barrels (Limousin, Allier, Tronçais) for two or three years, then racked into Slavonian oak barrels for four more years. During this aging process, additional alcoholic fermentations take place.
