The Jean-Claude Ramonet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru appears a bright lemon color in the glass. Aromas of acacia blossom and fresh pears lead to opulent flavors of spiced pear and citrus with brioche. Complex, concentrated and well structured with a persistent finish and great finesse.
After the grapes are hand harvested and pressed, fermentation takes place in tanks before being transferred to barrels. All wines undergo native fermentation. Ramonet believes that the gross lees contribute good elements to the the wine so they do not allow them to settle out after pressing. Aged for 12 months in 60-70% new oak.
Pierre Ramonet had a peasant background and became a legend by creating one of the finest domaines in Burgundy through sheer hard work and a genius for wine. The wines of Ramonet are in a class of their own, Jean-Claude and Noël are the third generation producers of the domaine known for producing wines of overall consistency and excellence. The Chardonnays of Ramonet are among the most age-worthy of the Côte de Beaune and their Montrachet is unheralded. The wines of Ramonet show concentrated, complex fruit character with mineral expression from limestone soils, and a creamy, elegant texture. The 1.6 acre plot is located on the Puligny side, rather than the Chassagne side.
Here the nose is firmly reduced so in the unlikely event you're interested in opening a bottle right away, be sure to give it 30 minutes or so of air and decanting it would be better still. Otherwise, there is slightly better underlying energy to the rich yet nicely detailed, even precise, middleweight plus flavors that also deliver impressive length on the bitter lemon-inflected finale. While this isn't as structured as it usually is, it's still going to need close to a decade if you wish to see the '19 Bâtard at its peak. Drink: 2029+
