Vibrant aromas of blueberries, ripe plums, black cherries, cinnamon and vanilla on the nose. The palate is sultry and luxurious, with densely packed flavors of berry compote, wild bramble, plum tart and spicy Christmas cake. Ripe tannins are beautifully intertwined between the layers of fruit, adding a dense and broad texture to the wine. The subtle spicy tones and plush black cherry flavors on the lingering finish completes a very elegant and ageworthy wine.
Kanonkop is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The vineyards range between 197 and 395 feet above sea level. The majority of the vineyards are situated on southwest-facing slopes, considered the most favorable aspect for vines in the Cape. The soils are predominantly red decomposed granite with a high clay content and excellent water retention capacity. Kanonkop’s Pinotage vines were some of the first to be established commercially in the Cape, and they range up to 67 years of age! They are maintained as dry farmed bush vines in order to achieve maximum sun exposure and optimal ripeness.
100% Pinotage from 32 to 67 year old bush vines matured for 18 months in 80% new and 20% second fill 225L French Nevers oak barrels.
The 2020 Pinotage Stellenbosch exudes both breadth and structure with firm and intense black fruit aromas complemented by hints of oak that elevate the floral and oaky essences. It is highly expressive and boasts fresh blackberry and spice layers that tantalize the palate. Medium to full-bodied with complex layers of dark fruit and a bold, spicy profile, this beautiful Pinotage concludes with a refined and zesty finish with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins. 72,000 bottles were produced after the wine rested for 16 months in French oak, 80% new. Bravo! Anticipated Maturity: 2023-2032
