The 2021 may be the most exciting bottling of this wine yet, seductive white stone fruit, wonderful juicy acidity and florality with a touch of mineral saltiness. Wonderful for drinking now but will age very well!

With the Hidden Treasures Projects Roland Velich of Moric partners with a few talented winemakers from across the border in Hungary. Their collaboration aims to showcase the historic and cultural past of Burgenland and Hungary through their often shared indigenous grapes and to give them their due attention.

The projects are numbered by region. No. 1 is Tokaj, No. 2 is Somlo and this, No. 3 is Balaton, a collaboration with Philipp Oser of Villa Tolnay. Philip Oser originates from Switzerland and started Villa Tolnay on the shores of Lake Balaton in 2004. Here, Oser grows Riesling and Furmint in rich basalt soils. The vineyards stretch up Csobanc hill, the remains of a magnificent volcanic mountain surrounded by the sedimentary deposits of the former Pannonian Sea. The distinct minerality in these soils make the Lake Balaton region a very special place to make wine. The wine undergoes spontaneous/native fermentation partly in used Stockinger barrels or Hungarian oak and partly in stainless steel.

From volcanic (basalt) soils, the 2021 Balaton Riesling / Furmint is pure, fresh and precise on the intense and elegant nose that reveals ripe fruit intertwined with saline, crystalline and stony aromas. Intense and juicy on the palate, with floral and fruity flavors and a round and charming texture, this is a linear and elegant blend with ripe acidity yet a structuring minerality and crunchy phenol grip. It's still young but age-worthy. 13% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted chez Moric in Austria in September 2024. Anticipated Maturity: 2028-2040
