An alluring pale, white gold shimmers in the glass with inviting aromas of white guava, gooseberries, freshly mown grass , kaffir lime and lemongrass. The entry of the 2023 Blank Stare is dominated by mouthwatering acidity and hints of lemon-lime sorbet, starfruit, kiwi and grapefruit rind. A touch of crème fraiche as the palate transitions to a close is met with bright notes of key lime pie and pointed, satiating acidity.
Orin Swift Description
The Russian River Valley of Sonoma County is known primarily for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but when we decided to produce a fresher style of Sauvignon Blanc, we were drawn to the cool climate winegrowing region. With the goal of making a bright, energetic wine, as opposed to our richer and more robust Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Veladora, we selected specific blocks from the Laguna Ranch, Two Rock, Asti and MacMurray vineyards. Furthermore, most of the wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the acidity with a small portion barrel fermented to provide a soft creaminess to the final blend.
100% Sauvignon Blanc, 70% Fermented in stainless steel tanks 30% Barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, 49% new for four months.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
Sourced from Gallo's Laguna Ranch property in the Russian River Valley, Orin Swift's 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Blank Stare is really ripe, even vaguely tropical in style, with notes of fig, melon and guava—it's barely herbal at all—on the nose. Thirty percent of the total volume was barrel-fermented, with half of that in new wood, while the other 70% was made in stainless steel tanks. The result is medium- to full-bodied and slightly silky but more on the crisp, citrusy side of the spectrum, with pleasing length to the finish. Anticipated Maturity: 2024-2026
