On the nose the wine has tension and vibrant aromas of green pear, pineapple, green apple, lemon citrus and wet minerals. Mouthfeel has a refreshing zingy-ness, nice weight of citrusy fruits and dry, crisp finish. Pair this one with oyters in a mignonette sauce, shrimp tacos w/ a tropical salsa, or a creme fraiche pizza w/ lardons.
While Chenin Blanc has not been planted on the Rustenberg estate since the late 1980’s there is an abundance of superb bush vine Chenin Blanc in Stellenbosch, which we discovered in sourcing fruit for the Straw Wine each vintage. Grapes were hand harvested from 4 different bush vine blocks, 20 to 35 years old, in the Bottelary sub-region of Stellenbosch. This wine is a Rustenberg take on a varietal synonymous with South Africa.
Rustenberg is one of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine farms, with a viticultural history dating back to 1682. In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought the Rustenberg farm, situated in a prime location on the slopes of the Simonsberg. After taking control of the farm operations in 1987, their son Simon ushered in a new era, catapulting the historic estate to the ranks of South Africa’s winemaking elite.
Fresh pears, apples and white grapefruit on the nose. Excellent clarity and freshness with a medium body and clean finish.
