A blend of fruit from young vines in côtes Brune and Blonde, this is lush and youthful, brimming with floral purple fruit. There's a touch of oak spice, but the focus is on fruit, juicy and dark with a sense of breezy freshness. It's not profound, but it's elegant and delicious.
The Ogier family has lived in Ampuis, in Côte-Rôtie, for seven generations. The scion, Stephane, who trained both in Burgundy and at stellar wineries abroad, combines a reverence for tradition, a keen palate, and an understanding that method matters.
Their estate has been blessed with rich soils (a mix of limestone and clay), clean air & long days of gorgeous sun.
Stéphane Ogier remains at the top of his game and is unquestionably one of the benchmark producers in Côte Rôtie today. Since officially taking the reins from his father Michel in 2000, he's expanded the estate considerably, constructed a modern winery just outside Ampuis, and built one of the most complete portfolios in the Northern Rhône.
The cellar approach here is thoughtful and not dogmatic, with stem usage varying by site and vintage, ferments primarily in stainless steel, and the wines aged in used barrels and demi-muids, with no fining or filtration.
These are beautifully made, classically styled wines that over-deliver across the board.
Usually the first ate Rotie to be bottled, the 2022 Cote-Rotie Mon Village kicks off with alluring notes of black cherry, crushed rock, black plum and a flicker of licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, round and concentrated, the delicious 2022 offers solid persistence on the structured finish. Give it three more years in bottle before pulling the cork
