Ruby red with light garnet hues in color. On the nose it is pleasant and fragrant, with notes of dried violet, cherries, peach, myrtle liqueur, dark spices. Persistent red fruit and earthy aromas, followed by a mix of bitter-sweet sensations supported by fine-grained smooth tannins. A lively long finish with black berry jam. Harmonious and elegant.
Vulcani d’Italia is a very focused little operation. As the name suggests, they only make wines sourced from the slopes of Italian volcanos, specifically Mount Vulture in Basilicata and Mount Etna on the island of Sicily. This is their Etna Rosso, a blend of 90% nerello mascalese and 10% nerello cappuccio, all hand-harvested off a vineyard at 600 metres altitude on the northeast slope of Mount Etna. The wine then rests for twelve months in seasoned oak to provide structure yet let the fruit take centre stage.
The saline, floral nose presents aromas of mandarin blossom, wet slate, crushed rocks, sour cherry and wild strawberry. The palate sweetens with orange slices and strawberries, while undertones of herbs and pepper provide balance, before a tangy, saline finish. -D.C.
