The Tamdhu 12 opens with rich and enticing aromas of iced cinnamon rolls, orange boiled sweets, raisins, sweet oak, and a hint of mint. The palate is silky and mouth-coating, with flavors of banana, berry jam, malt biscuit, and classic sherry oak depth. The finish is long and balanced, revealing ground spice, dried fruit, soft Scottish tablet, and the faintest wisp of peat smoke.
Founded in 1897, Tamdhu was built with one goal: to create the finest whisky in the world. The distillery was designed by Charles C. Doig, one of the most respected distillery architects of the time, and located on the banks of the River Spey, a region renowned for its whisky heritage. Tamdhu’s defining feature is its unwavering commitment to 100% sherry oak cask maturation. Every drop of Tamdhu 12 Year Old is aged in first fill and refill American and European oak Oloroso sherry casks, sourced directly from the cooperages and bodegas of Jerez in Spain’s ‘sherry triangle’. This meticulous process ensures a depth of flavour and natural colour that sets Tamdhu apart. After a brief closure in 2010, Tamdhu was revived in 2012 by Ian Macleod Distillers, who restored the distillery to its original glory — continuing the founders’ legacy with the same passion and precision.
