Deep ruby red in color, clean and bright. The nose shows intense notes of ripe red fruits and notes from barrel aging such as toast, spices and smoke. The palate reveals a well-structured wine with firm but polished, rounded tannins and notes of fruit compote and elegant oak. The long finish adds to the ability of the wine to age well for a considerable time in bottle.
Viña Real Reserva is made mainly from grapes from Rioja Alavesa vineyards. The grapes come primarily from the towns of Laguardia and Elciego. Neighbouring municipalities have been involved in the production of this wine for several decades. The plots are small and sometimes terraced, featuring over 30-year old head-trained and unirrigated vines. The soils are mostly calcareous, poor in organic matter, with smaller yields and varying aspects.
90% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano
The wine is aged in new single-use French and American oak barrels for an average of 22 months, with manual racking taking place every 4 months in the first year. Once bottled, the wine is aged in the Viña Real cellars for a minimum of one and a half years to develop a rounded and complex flavour before being released onto the market.
Interesting plum, smoke, forest floor and oyster shell aromas. Lead pencil. Medium-bodied with subtle notes of matchstick, sandalwood and fresh berries. Minerally. Juicy and savory.
The young and lively 2018 Viña Real Reserva showcases the style of a cooler year with contained ripeness and Viña Real character. It's a gastronomical wine with very good freshness and red rather than black fruit, sweet spices and even a touch of blood orange peel. It's tasty, juicy and easy to drink, with a medium body and integrated oak. They might have used more French oak in the 2018, as they are renewing their barrels. 180,000 bottles. It was bottled in March 2021. Anticipated Maturity: 2022-2027
