The 2022 Machete relaxes in the glass with an opaque, inky garnet core and a neon violet rim; be careful, it stains. Aromatically, the wine opens with powerful notes of bright black plum, slate, cacao, wild sage and crushed gravel. The transition to the palate screams with its brawny presence of brooding blackberry pie and ripe blue fruits yet tempered with hints of orange peel and Amarena cherry. Chewy tannins, typical of Petite Sirah, soften over time and culminate in a lengthy finish with a note of sweet oak.

From the early days of Orin Swift, Petite Sirah had been a dependable blending tool that provided weight, color and additional complexity to many of our red wines. But we kept coming across vineyards and, subsequently, lots of Petite Sirah that we were amazed by and couldn’t keep blending away. And so, back in 2009, we decided to start Machete our ode to Petite Sirah. Stalwart vineyards such as Summerwind in the Yorkville Highlands , Stone’s Throw in the Alexander Valley and Monte Rosso on Moon Mountain have been and will continue to be the backbone of Machete for years to come.

A blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache aged for 12 months in French Oak, 36% mew.

A blend based on Petite Sirah, the 2022 Red Blend Machete features classic Petite Sirah aromas of black cherries, blueberries and licorice. Full-bodied and big-boned, this is very ripe, yet it's surprisingly tart, mouthwatering and bright on the finish, framed by ripe, softly dusty tannins. Anticipated Maturity: 2024-2035
