Rhys Vineyards Description

100% Pinot Noir aged 18 months in 30% new French oak and for 15 months, the wine was aged on its lees.

Planted in 2004 with a total of 21.5 acres, Horseshoe Vineyard is less than a half mile from Alpine Vineyard, but they are different in many ways. The ridge between the vineyards protects Horseshoe from some of the direct ocean influence, but allows for similarly cool temperatures. More importantly, Horseshoe lies on a ridge of sedimentary shale called Monterey formation that has made its way to surface over the millennia. This lightweight, brittle, rust-mottled shale is prevalent throughout the surface and soil, providing for low vigor and outstanding drainage. Pinot Noir is planted here between 1,360 and 1,610 feet in elevation.

Wine Advocate: 96 Points

The 2019 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is unusually wide open from the first pour, offering an immediately dazzling nose of perfectly ripe red fruits, cherry blossoms, cured meat, river rocks and petrichor. The palate is silky, suave and precise with less weight than usual, seemingly sacrificing none of the power, complexity and refreshing momentum generated with aeration. Echoing the palate, the finish is initially more subtle than explosive, nevertheless ending up at the same amazingly complex, expansive destination. As always, this does nothing but morph and gain dimension with time, as I have no doubt it will do over the next two decades. Anticipated Maturity: 2024-2044
